Dress Up Your Pet Day

“Nothing is better than a dog in a sweater.” – Unknown.

January 14th is National Dress Up Your Pet Day!

Like I need another excuse to dress up our adorable furry family members? It’s National Dress Up Your Pet Day, and it’s also a cause for celebration for the Sugarboys Family.  This past year, I saw our highest number of custom pet sweater sales since I started sharing our gifts with the world! I wanted to appreciate our customers by sharing some personal Sugarboys “tails” about some fur babies who love our sweaters.

Mongie looking magical

I love this photo of 14-year-old Italian Greyhound/Rat Terrier mix Mongie.  This beautiful pup is sporting a mock cable sweater with a mock turtleneck in the colorway basil. She loves the superb quality of our handknit piece, and the color is perfect for the cold weather season. I mean, just look at her up against those fall colors! According to mom:

Mongie wears it all the time. It fits her perfectly, and she seems to love it. I've washed it once already (on delicate cycle, laid flat to dry), and it looks great.”- Heather

Our custom dog sweaters are handmade by me: incorporating classic and prized design to remind you of warmth and nature. I also handpick the colors and know you will find the perfect fit and style for your pet!

Custom sweater for Pondo

Can’t find one of the creations in your size? No problem!  I custom made this cool accessory for Pondo, an Olde English Bull Dogge.  To ensure the perfect fit, I sent Pondo’s mom a sample sweater in extra-large; I keep it on hand for dressing a life-sized stuffed Labrador Retriever for craft shows.  The sample allowed me to make some custom tweaks to ensure the best fit. But take it from her:

“Both Pondo and I love it Shelly! Thank you for taking the time to do this. The colors are beautiful and the sweater is so soft. You really do an amazing job!”

Custom sweater for Remi

In November, I met the very handsome and regal Remington, a Springer Spaniel living near me.  Pet dad wanted something that would show off his colors so he chose a mock cable sweater in the colorway pullman.  Pet mom wanted the turtleneck extra long so the neck can be folded up to function as a “snood” to keep those ears from dragging in the dirt.  One session of measurements and a week later the sweater was done!  They ordered a second sweater for sister Lucy too!

There are many different sizes available on our website; however, Sugarboy’s motto is “Measure Twice, Buy Once!”  Can’t find a sweater in your size? No problem!

Here is our recommended measuring guide:

  1. Dogs come in all shapes, so it is essential to pick the sweater size based on chest measurement. To determine the chest size, measure around the dog’s chest at the largest point.
  2. Finished sizes vary because ribbing stretches and can be blocked to different sizes. Pick a size where your dog’s chest measurement is near the middle of the range given.
  3. To determine the sweater’s length, measure your dog’s back from the base of the neck to the base of the tail.

Washing Instructions

Wool sweaters are wardrobe staples for autumn and winter months, and merino wool is one of the most versatile and resilient fibers. Other fibers have yet to mimic its natural benefits of renewable, soft next to the skin, and biodegradable.
