“My face may be white but my heart is pure gold. There is no shame in growing old.”- Unknown

November is Adopt A Senior Pet Month

When we imagine bringing home a new pet, we often see images of a small puppy or kitten with a bow tied around their neck.  We are not going to lie: young animals have a special place in our hearts and are adorable to watch grow. But shelters and rescues feel the pressure of homing the less popular furry companions: senior pets. This November, consider gifting one of the most precious gifts an aging pet could ask for: a loving home to finish out their golden years.

Why is there a National Adopt a Senior Pet Month?

According to the AVMA, a senior pet is classified as a dog or cat at seven years of age and older, with smaller dog breeds classified as senior starting at age five. This is considered middle age for pets, and most still have a lot of life and love to give. Despite this, senior pets are less likely to be adopted from a shelter or rescue. Older pets like dogs have a 25%  adoption rate compared to younger dogs with a 60% adoption rate.

While there is no clear cut answer to why senior pets are adopted less, we can assume that is based on some fears regarding:

The possible medical needs of the pet may lead to higher vet bills.
The assumption that “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” and therefore, your pet will have difficulty assimilating to you or your familys' lifestyle.
The desire to see the pet grow up or have more years with your companion.
Fear your older pet will be less engaged.

The truth is, senior pets have just as much to bring to the table as their younger counterparts and are excellent candidates for a forever home.

Benefits of Adopting a Senior Pet

We have outlined a few of the most important benefits of adopting a senior pet:

1. Senior pets are very adaptable: Most senior pets are likely to settle in a home environment more quickly than a younger pet but will need a little time to learn the layout of their new home. Keep in mind that senior pets are highly adaptive and capable of learning new routines and skills.

2. Senior pets are worthy of companionship: Many senior pets are surrendered for adoption at no fault of their own. They may have had an owner pass or a life change in the family that is not best suited for their needs. When adopting a senior pet, you are adopting a friend that is still worthy of love!

3. Senior pets are the perfect fit for many households: A senior pet can be a perfect choice depending on the owners' lifestyle. For example, a person working from home might enjoy an animal that spends its time napping near them. Senior pets offer an opportunity to enjoy fun interaction along with close downtime.

4. You can make a difference: Saving an older pet from a shelter or rescue could mean saving it from euthanasia or living its golden years in a kennel. The gift of a forever home is the best gift you could give to a senior animal.
